STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Today's archive page is from June 23, 1990. A sixth body had been discovered by law enforcement agents at a site in Chelsea believed to have been used by Bonanno crime family hit man Thomas "Tommy Karate" Pitera. In 1992, Pitera was convicted of killing six people, two of whom were murdered because Pitera feared they were federal informants and would endanger his drug ring. Prosecutors believed Pitera was responsible for some 30 murders.
